It's Friday, and Friday means lots of new music releasing. British singer-songwriter, Mimi Webb, is out with her newest single “House on Fire." This girl never misses, and this time is no exception.

With a uniqueness to her voice, one I have only heard from a small number of artists like Tate McRae and Sia, she truly brings something new to the table. In House on Fire, she plays with the idea of burning down the house of her ex, when she finds out he has been cheating on her. Her opening line “I make friends with the head of police, to make sure he’d suspect me the least” really sets the scene, and shows we are dealing with another bad-bitch-anthem!
Though, what made me get up from my chair in pure excitement was her play on words, especially in the pre chorus. In first pre chorus, she sings: “And sure we dated once in a while. But if there was a motive, it's not enough for a trial”, while she in the second pre chorus sings:"Yeah, we might have touched, we might have kissed. But, darling, I'm sorry, it's not enough to convict"
What I find so refreshing about this is the way of combining words from two different categories that normally don't go hand in hand. Love and crime. And the rhyming while/trial, kissed/convict. You get it. When music sounds good I get excited, but when someone carries a theme all the way through a song, which is the case here, it shows professionalism and I get ecstatic.
It has been an ongoing trend for a while now for women to make songs about guys being “stupid”, “toxic” or “cheaters”. On one hand, I feel bad for the guys, but on the other hand, nothing beats jumping up and down singing “stupid boy making me so sad” into your hairbrush, and pretending like you just dumped a guy. When in reality you have no love-life.
My point is, we have a whole new generation of empowering women, who make this music to emphasize how our self-worth shouldn’t be relying on some guy, who doesn’t have a clue how lucky he is to be with you. I’m all here for that.
The thing about “House on Fire" that I find a bit comical though, is if you strip it from all the music and just sit there with the lyrics, it is basically a very detailed game plan with an incorporated escape plan. Just putting that out there.
Overall, I am loving this new tune from Mimi, and I think we are a lot of people just waiting for her to release more.
